Volume Lash Trays: A Lash Tech's Complete Guide
Volume lash trays are the backbone of any lash artist's kit — but reading a tray label can feel like decoding a secret language. Diameters, curls, lengths, fan counts… this guide explains exactly what every number means so you can build the perfect set for every client, faster.
What are volume lash trays?
A volume lash tray is a strip card holding rows ("lines") of ultra-fine individual extensions. Unlike classic lashes (one extension per natural lash), volume lashes are fanned — you pick up several featherweight extensions and attach them as one fan to a single natural lash, creating fullness without weight. Our Tiana Mink Volume Lash Trays hold 16 lines per tray for plenty of working length.
Classic vs. Volume vs. Mega volume
- Classic — 1 extension per natural lash. Defined, mascara-like, naturally enhancing.
- Volume — fans of 2D–6D applied to one natural lash. Soft, fluffy, dimensional density.
- Mega volume — fans of 7D–16D using ultra-fine diameters. Dark, dramatic, full coverage.
Understanding diameter
Diameter is the thickness of a single extension in millimetres. For volume work you go thinner so the fan stays light on the natural lash:
- 0.03–0.05 mm — mega and high-volume fans (7D+).
- 0.05–0.07 mm — everyday volume fans (2D–6D).
- 0.10 mm+ — classic and hybrid sets.
The golden rule: the more lashes in your fan, the thinner the diameter must be to protect the natural lash.
Choosing a curl
| Curl | Effect | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| B | Soft, subtle lift | Natural sets, straight lashes |
| C | Classic open-eye curl | The most versatile, everyday curl |
| CC / D | Dramatic lift | Glam sets, downward-growing lashes |
| L / M | Lifted base, defined tip | Hooded and monolid eyes |
Length & length mapping
Lengths typically run from 7Â mm to 18Â mm. Rather than one length across the eye, map the lashes to flatter the eye shape:
- Natural / open eye — longest in the centre, tapering shorter at inner and outer corners.
- Cat eye — gradually longer toward the outer corner for a lifted, elongated look.
- Doll eye — longest in the centre to round and open the eye.
Our mixed-length trays (10–14, 14–20, 16–24 mm and more) make mapping easy from a single tray.
How many lashes are in a tray?
Each Tiana tray holds 16 lines of extensions. The number of usable fans depends on your diameter and fan count, but one tray comfortably covers multiple full sets, making trays the most cost-effective way to stock your station.
Retention tips for volume sets
- Keep fans lightweight — match diameter to fan count so you never overload a natural lash.
- Ensure a clean, oil-free lash line before application.
- Attach 1–2 mm from the lid, never on the skin.
- Cure adhesive fully and send clients home with aftercare guidance.

Frequently asked questions
What diameter should a beginner start with?
0.07 mm for 2D–4D fans — forgiving to pick up and fan while staying light on the natural lash.
Are mink volume lashes cruelty-free?
Yes — "mink" describes the soft, matte finish; our trays are made from synthetic PBT fibre, not animal hair.
How do I stop fans from closing?
Use the right diameter for your fan count, let your adhesive set fully, and avoid touching the base after placement.
